How to Make a Stylish Name for Instagram, TikTok and Games
By Stylish Name Team · Updated · 5 min read
Say your name is Maya. On a profile page it looks like every other Maya. Now compare 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐚, 𝓜𝓪𝔂𝓪, 𝕸𝖆𝖞𝖆 and 𝕄𝕒𝕪𝕒. Same four letters, four different personalities, and none of them needed a design app. That is all a stylish name is: ordinary text swapped for look-alike characters that happen to be decorated.
Here is how to make one that works, and not just one that looks good on a generator page.
Step 1: decide what the name is for
This sounds obvious, but it settles most of the choices. A name for a gaming lobby has different needs from a name on a business Instagram account.
- A social profile needs to stay readable at thumbnail size. Bold, small caps or a light script are the usual picks.
- A game nickname is limited by the game's own filter. Fraktur and bold letters pass more often than long chains of symbols.
- A bio line or caption can take more decoration, because it is read slowly and in context.
- A group or server name has to sort well in a list, so a bracket or a single emoji at the start does the job.
Step 2: type your name and look at the options
Open the Stylish Name generator and type your name once. Every card updates instantly, so you can scroll through a couple of hundred looks without retyping. If you already know the mood, start on a narrower page instead: Clean Fonts for readable styles, Coquette / Soft for gentle script, Y2K / Cyber for blackletter and leetspeak.
Try your name in lowercase and in capitals. It changes more than you'd expect. Script fonts usually look best in lowercase, fraktur looks best with a capital first letter, and some small-caps styles look odd if you type capitals because the letters are already small capitals.
Step 3: copy it, then check it somewhere private
Tap the card you like. It copies to your clipboard. Before you paste it into a live profile, paste it into a notes app or a message to yourself. You are checking two things: that every letter came through (some styles have no version of accented letters or punctuation), and that it still looks right on your own phone.
If part of your name stays in plain letters inside a fancy style, that style doesn't have those characters. Pick another card rather than living with half a fancy name.
Step 4: paste it into the right field
This is where most people get stuck. Different fields on the same app follow different rules.
| Where | Fancy text? |
|---|---|
| Instagram Name field | Yes |
| Instagram @username | No, letters, numbers, periods and underscores only |
| TikTok nickname | Yes |
| TikTok @username | No |
| Discord nickname | Yes |
| WhatsApp profile name | Yes |
| Most game nicknames | Sometimes, depends on the game's filter |
If you want the detail for a particular app, the guides on the Instagram name vs username, Discord nicknames and the Free Fire name cover each one in depth.
Step 5: keep a plain version somewhere
A styled name is a different string from the plain one. Search won't treat them as equal, and neither will a person trying to type your name into a box. Keep your username simple and put the styling in the display name or bio. Your followers will find you by the plain handle and recognise you by the style.
How the trick actually works
You may wonder why this works at all. Unicode, the standard that defines every character your phone can show, contains whole alphabets of bold, italic, script and gothic letters. They were added so mathematicians could write bold or script variables in plain text. A generator maps each normal letter to its counterpart in one of those alphabets. The result is genuine text, not an image, which is why it can be copied and pasted anywhere. If you are curious about the details, what fancy text fonts are and how Unicode makes them work goes through it properly.
Three ways to make a stylish name
You can use a web generator, a keyboard app, or type the characters yourself using Unicode code points. The generator is quickest and needs nothing installed. A keyboard app is handy if you do this constantly, but it adds a permission-hungry app to your phone. Typing code points is only for the very patient.
Common mistakes
- Too much at once. A script font, three emoji and a bracket frame around a four-letter name is a lot. Pick one idea.
- Ignoring the length limit. Many fancy characters count as two characters in a counted field. A name that fits as plain text can be cut off when styled.
- Using it in a username. The field will reject it or quietly convert it to plain letters.
- Forgetting dark mode. Pale symbols vanish on white, dark ones disappear on black. Look at both.
- Choosing by the preview only. The card on a big screen is not the thumbnail in a feed. Zoom out before you commit.

A quick example, start to finish
Take a small bakery account called Rosa's Bakes. The owner wants something warm but legible. On the generator, the script styles look lovely but the apostrophe and the "s" are a little cramped at small size. Bold serif is clear but a bit formal. A small-caps version, ʀᴏꜱᴀ'ꜱ ʙᴀᴋᴇꜱ, is calm and fits in the narrow Name field. She pastes that into her Instagram Name field, adds a single 🍞 after it, and keeps the username as a plain @rosasbakes. The profile is recognisable, the handle is searchable, and nothing was rejected. That's the whole job done in about five minutes.
Questions people ask before they start
Do I need to install anything? No. Everything runs in the browser, and the copied text goes to your clipboard like any other text.
Will the person who sees my profile need a special app? No. They see characters, not an effect. The only requirement is a device whose fonts include those characters, which covers nearly every phone made in the last several years.
