How to Write a WhatsApp Status or About Line in Stylish Text
By Stylish Name Team · Updated · 5 min read
WhatsApp is the app where your name is seen by the widest mix of people: family, coworkers, neighbours, clients and an old school friend you haven't spoken to in years. That makes styled text a different question than it is on Instagram. The goal is not to impress strangers. It is to look like you, in a way that everyone you know is comfortable with.
The three places text lives
- Profile name. What others see when you message them or appear in a group. It is short; about 25 characters.
- About. The line under your name, which also shows in contact info. Around 139 characters.
- Status (Updates). Short posts that disappear after 24 hours, plus text-only statuses with coloured backgrounds.
Limits in WhatsApp change with updates, so treat the numbers as a guide and look at the live counter.
Group names are a fourth place, set by a group admin. They accept Unicode too.
WhatsApp has its own formatting
Before reaching for a generator, know what WhatsApp can do in messages without help:
- Put asterisks around text for bold:
*text* - Underscores for italic:
_text_ - Tildes for strikethrough:
~text~ - Three backticks for monospace: three backticks before and after the text
That formatting works in chats and in status text, but not in your profile name or About line. Those are plain text fields, so formatting characters would just appear as symbols. Unicode styles fill the gap, because they are characters, not formatting.
A sensible split: use WhatsApp's formatting for messages and Unicode styles for names. On the WhatsApp nickname page you can see every style that suits profile fields.
Choosing a style for a mixed audience
The usual rule of "match your vibe" gets a twist here. Because family and colleagues see it, readability matters more than mood.
- For work contacts: bold sans or small caps. For example 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀.
- For friends: italic, a light script or a heart. For example 𝓶𝓲𝓶𝓲 ♡.
- For a small business: your brand name in bold plus what you sell, followed by hours in the About line.
- For a family-heavy phone: plain or lightly styled. Older relatives may see boxes on older devices, as explained here.
About line ideas
The About line is short and easy to overlook, but it's seen every time someone opens your contact. A few ways to use it:
The mood line. 𝓼𝓵𝓸𝔀 𝓶𝓸𝓻𝓷𝓲𝓷𝓰𝓼, 𝓵𝓸𝓾𝓭 𝓹𝓵𝓪𝔂𝓵𝓲𝓼𝓽𝓼
The availability line. ʙᴜꜱʏ · ʀᴇᴘʟʏ ʙʏ ᴇᴠᴇɴɪɴɢ
The business line. 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 Mon–Sat, 9–6 · 𝐎𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 by message
The one-word line. 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥
The quote. 𝑆𝑚𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑝𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡. (Use a plain-text quote if your device renders italic poorly.)
For a business, keep the plain words in plain letters. Many people use WhatsApp's search to find a shop by typing a keyword, and a decorated keyword won't match.
Status text and ideas
Text statuses are just a short message on a coloured background. WhatsApp's formatting works here, so you can bold a word without a generator. Stylised Unicode helps when you want a different look from the usual bold, such as small caps or a script phrase for a special occasion.
Good short statuses tend to be specific. "Monsoon again, tea again" says more than "Good vibes only". For seasonal ideas, see New Year bio ideas and Valentine's Day bio ideas; both work as WhatsApp lines too.
How to set each one
- Type your name or line on the generator and copy a style.
- Open WhatsApp → Settings → tap your name.
- Tap the pencil next to Name or About, paste, and save.
For a group name, open the group, tap the name at the top, and edit.
The contact-name catch
The name your friends see on their own phones is the one they saved. Your profile name only appears when someone hasn't saved you, or in group chats. If you want friends to use a particular nickname, tell them. You can't control it through your profile.
Safety and privacy
Your profile name is visible to people who have your number, subject to your privacy settings, and in group chats to everyone in the group. Avoid putting your address, school or other sensitive information in the About line. If you run a business, use a business number so personal details stay separate.
How people actually read your WhatsApp profile
Most people never open your profile. They see your name in a chat list or a group, and the About line only when they tap through. That has two practical consequences. First, the name has to work on its own at a small size: short, readable and not dependent on a symbol to make sense. Second, the About line is the place for extra information, so write it as if the reader has chosen to look. It can be a bit more specific, a bit more personal and a bit more styled.
A quick set of About lines by situation
- At work: ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙʟᴇ 9–5 · ᴇᴍᴀɪʟ ꜰᴏʀ ᴜʀɢᴇɴᴛ ᴛʜɪɴɢꜱ
- Travelling: 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐲 until 14 March, replies slow
- Studying: ᴇxᴀᴍ ꜱᴇᴀꜱᴏɴ · ʙᴀᴄᴋ ꜱᴏᴏɴ
- Running a side project: 𝐎𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 close Thursday, message to book
- Just a mood: 𝓽𝓮𝓪 𝓯𝓲𝓻𝓼𝓽, 𝓽𝓪𝓵𝓴𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓵𝓪𝓽𝓮𝓻
Notice that each one gives a piece of information. The About line is a rare chance to tell your contacts something useful without sending a message.
Business accounts are different
WhatsApp Business has its own business name, category, address and hours fields, which customers see in a proper profile. If you run a shop, fill those in instead of stuffing the information into a personal About line. Fancy text can still help in the business description, but keep addresses, hours and prices in plain text.
A few small tips
- Test on another phone, if possible, to catch squares and cropped names.
- Keep emoji to one or two. Long names get cut in the chat list.
- Don't use a symbol as your very first character if you want to be easy to find in contact lists, as alphabetical sorting can behave oddly.
- Change the About line regularly. It's one of the few free "notice boards" you have on the app.
A WhatsApp profile should be warm and easy to read. If the styling makes it harder to recognise you, simplify it.
